We are Loving Fall’s Fresh Finds

September 26, 2012

With fall officially in the air it means lots of new local goodies growing in the Lowcountry, and all over for that matter. Many people think of fresh local finds only in the warmer weathers, but that’s just not the case. Fall has a lot to offer when it comes to homegrown treats.

At Cru Café and Cru Catering we love using what’s local, seasonal and fresh in our dishes and event menus. Fall veggies include an array of flavors from turnips to edamame, and we love them all. During the fall most leafy greens tend to be harvested (think arugula, chard, kale, fennel, endive). Harvesting these greens during cooler temperatures gives them a sweeter, less bitter, flavor.

Due to our climate we have a lot of flexibility with our gardens. Our first frost comes later (if at all) and gives our fall produce more time to mature for harvest, not to mention the cooler weather wards away the insects. The Lowcountry is a prime spot for growing broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower during this time of year. Fall is also a great time to grow root vegetables like carrots, beets or radishes.

Don’t possess a green thumb? Here is a list of some other fall fruits and veggies to look for when hitting the Farmer’s Market or your favorite fresh restaurants, like us here at Cru:
